Sweet Potato Saagu/Curry

Sweet Potato is one of the yummy vegetable that I love to use it in varieties of dishes. Here we go with another dish done, using sweet potato. The sweetness in sweet potato adds to the taste and you don't need to add extra sugar/jaggery or any form of sweetness.


Saagu /Curry done to eat with Pooris. Yep, you need some thing yummy to have hot hot fluffy Pooris.
I have used Sweet Potatoes, potatoes, carrots as vegetables and some spices to add the taste and health.
As usual I have not added any onions or garlic to this Yummy Sweet Potato Saagu/Curry. This saagu is one of the yummy side dish which goes well with chapatis, dosas, rotis idli, plain rice etc.

No Onion and No Garlic Curry.

Let us see the recipe now :

Ingredients :

To Cook :
Sweet Potato : 2 Medium sized
Potato : 2 Medium sized
Carrots : 2 Medium sized
To grind :
Fresh grated coconut : 1 Bowl /4 to 5 tbs
Green chilly : 2 to 3 (mild spices)
Jeera /Cumin Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
Coriander Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
Coriander leaves : 1 Handful
Ginger : An inch
Seasoning :
Cooking Oil : 2 Tsps
Jeera /Cumin Seeds : 1/2 Tsp
Curry Leaves : 6 to 8
Ingh : A little
To Add :
Salt : As required.

Method :

1. Wash and remove the outer layer of sweet potatoes, potatoes and scrape out carrots outer layer.


2. Wash ginger and remove the outer layer. Wash it again and cut into pieces.
3. Cut the vegetables into small and put it in a cooker and cook. Let it cool.
4. Grate coconut and grind it with jeera/cumin seeds, green chilly, an inch of ginger, coriander leaves and coriander seeds.

5. Keep  the cooked vegetables on the fire and add salt. Mix it well and cook for a minute.


6. Add ground coconut spice mixture, and little turmeric. Mix it well and cook it for 2 to 3 minutes.


7. Shift the ready Sweet Potato Saagu to a serving dish and add jeera , ingh, curry leaves seasoning.


8. Mix it well and serve it with Hot poori or choice of your main dish.

Time : 30 Minutes.
Serves : 3 to 4.

Cow Peas Cutlet

Cow Peas Cutlet is an easy dish and if you already cooked the pea it is still easy.☺
I had some cow pea cooked in the after noon and that came as handy when I thought of preparing some yummy cutlets.


Let us straight go to the recipe Now : I do not use so much varieties of spices. It is always simple and quick. 💟

Things You need :

Cooked Cow Peas : 1 Bowl
Aloo / Potatoes : 2 to 3
Bread : 3 to 4 Pieces.
Green chilly : 2
Ginger : An inch
Coriander leaves : 1 Tablespoon
Garam Masala : 1/2 Teaspoon
Jeera /Cumin seeds ? 1/2 Teaspoon
Chilly Powder : 1/2 Teaspoon
Jeera /Cumin seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
Cashew pieces : 1 Tablespoon
Salt : As required
Chiroti Rava /Thin variety of Semolina : 2 to 3 Tablespoon
Oil : 2 to 3 Tablespoons

Method :

1. Wash coriander leaves, green chilly and cut into small.
2. Cut bread pieces into small and crush them into powder form. You can use mixer to powder it.


3. Wash ginger and take out the outer layer, wash it again and grate it.
4. Peel off the skin of potatoes and smash it nicely.
5. Now put powdered bread crumbs, smashed potatoes, boiled cow peas, cut coriander leaves, cut green chilly, grated ginger, salt, garam masala, jeera powder, chilly powder, cut cashews.


 6. Mix all the ingredients nicely and prepare the dough.
7. Divide the cutlet dough into small portions.
8. Keep dry chiroti rava in a bowl.
9. Keep dosa pan on the fire and heat.
10. Take a small portion of cutlet dough and make as a ball. Slightly press and give a desired shape to it.

11. Just dip lightly in chiroti rava both sides. Place the cutlet on hot tava.


12. Put a teaspoon of oil around the cutlet. Cook till it turns golden brown.


13. Turn the other side and cook. Add some oil while cooking.


14. Now Hot cutlets are ready to serve.


15. Cook the remaining cutlets the same way.

Note :

Do not over cook potatoes. Drain all the water from cooked cow pea and use only the peas.
Adding more spices is optional. Adding more oil while cooking is optional. You can also shallow fry these cutlets. Adding onions or garlic is optional.
Time : 30 to 40 Minutes.
Serves : 2 to 3.

Mooli and Mixed leaves Curry

Mooli / Radish and mixed leaves Curry is a side dish and is full of nutritious and cooked with fresh spices.


I have used palak / spinach, goli soppu /purslane leaves and mooli/ radish.
The leaves are from our home. We have put some plants in the pot. And we get fresh, organic leaves.

Let us see the benefits of Goli Soppu/Purslane leaves.
The scientific name of Goli Soppu/Purslane leaf is Portulaca oleracea. The other names are pursley, pig weed or verdolaga.
Goli Soppu leaves are very low in calories and fats. They are rich source of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals. Fresh leaves are rich in Omega -3 fatty acids and is good for heart health. The leaves are rich source of Vitamin A, It is rich in antioxidant and vitamin for vision. It is good for skin health and heart health. It is rich in vitamin C and some B complex vitamins. They contain minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and manganese.

Goili Soppu / Purslane Leaves.

Bimbli /Averrhoa bilimbi (commonly known a sbilimbi, cucumber tree / sorrel tree) is a fruit bearing tree of Averrhoa fimily
Let us see the recipe now :
No Onion or No Garlic is used in this recipe.

Things Needed :

To Cook :
Toor Dal : 1/2 Cup
Goli Soppu /Purslane leaves : 1 Bowl
Palak /Spinach leaves : 1 Bowl.
Mooli /Radish : 2 Medium sized
Slit Green chilly :2

TO Grind :
Coconut : 1 Cup
Coriander Seeds : 1 Table spoon
Jeera/cumin seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
Dried Bimbli : 5 to 6 Pieces
Chilly powder : 3/4 Teaspoon

To Add :
Salt : As required
Coriander leaves : 2 Tablespoons

Seasoning with : 

Coconut Oil : 1 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
Ingh /Asafoetida : A little

Method :

1. Wash leaves and radish and cut into small pieces. Wash green chilly. Wash coriander leaves and curry leaves. cut them into small.


2. Wash and put toor dal to a pressure cooker.
3. Add cut leaves, radish, a slit green chilly and little turmeric. Add required water and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Grate coconut and grind it with coriander seeds, bimbli, jeera/cumin seeds and red chilly powder
5. Add required water to grind.   

6. Keep a pan and add cooked vegetables and dal. Add required salt. Let it cook for 2 minutes.

7.Add ground spice - coconut mixture and mix it well. Add 3 to 4 methi seeds to it. mix it well and boil.


8. Let it boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in between so that it does not get burnt.


9. Shift the curry to a serving bowl and add seasoning done in coconut oil with mustard seeds, curry leaves and ingh. Add cut coriander leaves.


Note :

Do not over cook the leaves and radish.  2 to 3 whistles will do if you are using pressure cooker.
You can also cook the leaves separately.  Adding raw coriander seeds and jeera adds to easy digest and adds aroma to the curry. Adding more dal is optional.
Time : 30 Minutes
Serves : 3 to 4 people.

Tava Roasted Sweet Potato Snack


Sweet Potato is one of the healthy carbohydrate filled vegetable. It is said that eating sweet potato is good for our health. We do use sweet potato for many dishes. Here is a simple snack which fits to all aged group and good to have in the evening and believe me it is yummy. Try and enjoy this easy, quick, healthy and simple Sweet Potato Snack.


I have given the name as tava/pan roasted, because I did not use much oil. Only drizzled some oil and cooked on low flame to taste better. Try and Enjoy.
All You need is sweet potatoes, carrot, and if you are an onion lover, onion pieces and little chat masala to add some spice to the chat.

Let us see some benefits of Eating " Sweet Potato " in our diet.

Sweet Potatoes are filled with vitamins and minerals. They help to boost our immunity system. They are fiber rich. They are good for controlling diabetes and people who suffer from blood pressure. They are rich in potassium. Potatoes help to digest the food easily since they are rich in fiber and good for people who suffer from constipation. It is rich in iron and Vitamin A which is essential for hormones and fertility. Sweet Potato is filled with anti - inflammation and anti oxidant properties.
Sweet potatoes are good for eye health. They are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B3 Vitamin B6, manganese, magnesium and copper.

Tava Roasted Sweet Potatoes are good for kids and all the age group people. They are soft, turned crisp at the outer layer and taste yummy.

Things Needed :

Sweet Potatoes : : 2 to 3 ( Medium sized )
Carrot : 1
Onion : 1 ( Optional )
Green chutney : 1/2 Teaspoon
Coriander leaves : 1 Tablespoon
Green chilly : 1
Cooking Oil : 2 Tablespoons
Garam Masala : 1/2 Tsp
Chat Masala : 1/2 Tsp
Salt : As required :
Curd : 1/2 Cup



Method :

1. Wash and scrape out the outer layer and grate carrot and keep it aside.
2. Wash and cut green chilly and coriander leaves. Crush them with little salt. Keep it aside.


3. Remove the outer layer of onion and cut into small pieces.
4. Wash and cook sweet potatoes and remove the outer layer and cut them into small ( according to your wish).
5. Keep a pan on the fire and heat. Sprinkle some oil and place the small pieces of sweet potatoes on the pan. Roast them on low flame. Sprinkle some oil on the top.


6. Turn the other side and cook them till they turn golden brown. Sprinkle little salt, garam masala and chat masala and let it fry slowly.


7. Remove them to a plate. Repeat the same with remaining pieces.


Now Plating :

1. Without Onion :
   Take a serving plate and spread some carrots and place roasted sweet potatoes on it.
 Sprinkle some more carrots and crushed green chilly and coriander mixture. Serve.




2. With Onions :

Take a serving plate. Spread carrot gratings. Place sweet potatoes. Add carrot gratings and cut onions. Put crushed coriander - green chilly mixture.  Serve.






3. With Curd : Adding onion is optional. I have not added onions.

Take a plate and spread carrots and place roasted sweet potato pieces.
Add some carrot gratings and coriander leaves - green chilly mixture.
Add curd on the top and serve.




Note : 

Do not over cook sweet potatoes. It does not taste good. Adding more oil and shallow frying sweet potato pieces is optional.
Use of onion is optional. Sprinkle some salt on the top is optional.
Let the spice be minimum. Crushed green chilly and coriander leaves adds to the taste.
Time : 15 Minutes if you already cooked sweet potatoes. To cook sweet potatoes another 5 to 6 minutes and to cool 10 minutes.
Serves : 2 to 3 .
