Rava Urid Dal Dosa

Rava Urid dal dosa is god to have for breakfast, snack time or even dinner. It is easy and even you can prepare it with out fermentation.

 I have prepared dosa without fermenting the batter, adding little curd and prepared spicy dosa, as set dosa and even thin and crispy dosa. Varieties of dosas can be prepared with this Rava urid dal dosa batter.
Let us see some benefits of using Rava/rave/semolina in our diet. 
Rava/Sooji/Semolina is rich in calcium, phosphorus,  potassium, iron, zinc, carbohydrates and proteins. They do contain vitamins B and E. It helps to loose weight. It is filled with fiber and good for digestion and easy bowel movement. It is low in cholesterol and sodium and is called as balanced food. Rava is digested slowly and keeps you full for a long time. Rava is good for people who suffer from diabetics. They help in building strong immunity system in our body. They also good for healthy metabolism and healthy muscles, nerves and bones.
Let us see the recipe now:
As I said earlier you can prepare dosas immediately as soon as you grind, then ferment and then use the batter for set dosas, thin dosas and spicy dosas.

Ingredients :

Urid dal : 1 Cup
Rava : 3 to 3 1/2 Cups.
Salt : As required
Oil : 3 to 4 Tablespoons

Method : 

1.Wash and soak urid dal for 2 to 3 hours and then grind it with required water.

2. Remove it from the mixi jar to a big bowl.


3. Add a glass of water to rava and then mix it well. Add this wet rava to ground urid dal batter.
4. Add salt and mix it well.
5. Let it ferment for over night or 6 to 7 hours.



6. Keep a pan on the fire and heat. Put little on the tava and clean it with a kitchen tissue.



 7. Mix the ferment batter nicely and take a ladle of dosa batter and spread it on hot tava in a circle shape. (Let the flame be low while spreading dosa batter).

 8. Cover and cook for a minute. Sprinkle little oil on the top. Turn the other side and cook for 10 seconds.

9. Remove dosa from the pan and serve hot dosa with curry /chutney/pickle.

10.Repeat the same with remaining batter.

Note :

Do not make the batter very  watery. The consistency of the batter should be normal dosa batter consistency.

Preparing spicy dosa :


Wash and cut coriander leaves, curry leaves and green chilly to dosa batter and prepare thick /set dosas.
Dosa with out fermenting the batter.
Mix dosa batter nicely and prepare dosas as normal dosa.

Black Eyed Beans & Capsicum Uppittu.

Uppittu/Upma is one of the breakfast dish prepared using Rava/Rave/Semolina. It is one of the easy dish that can be prepared within minutes and it is yummy to have it for breakfast/snack.


Many people love to have Uppittu with a cup of coffee /tea and it is one of the good combination. Uppittu is prepared in varieties. Use of vegetables, onions, pulses are used to prepare uppittu.
We from Udupi normally prepare simple coconut uppittu. It has no onion and it does contain more of coconut. Any functions or weddings Uppittu is one of the dish that served as breakfast.
I have used black eyed beans, capsicum and medium sized rava for Uppittu/Upma.
I have heard people saying, they feel heavy when they eat uppittu and It is because of rava, rave/semolina. It has the quality of slow digestion. It keeps you full for a long time. That is the reason people who diet or work out (Gym) eat food that is prepared in Semolina/Rava.

NO ONION OR NO GARLIC is used in Black Eyed Beans & Capsicum Uppittu ".

I have used fresh black eyed beans which is available in the market.
Let us see the recipe now :


Ingredients : 

Fresh Black Eyed Beans  : 1 Cup.
Capsicum : 1 (Medium size)
Green chilly : 2
Ginger : An inch
Rava/Semolina  Medium sized : 2 Cups
Ghee : 2 Tablespoons
Coconut Oil : 2 to 3 Tablespoons
Mustard seeds : 1 Teaspoon
Urid dal : 1 Teaspoon
Curry Leaves : 8 to 10
Salt : As required
Water : 4 1/2  Cup
Lemon : 1 ( 2 Teaspoons).
Grated fresh coconut : 1 Cup
Coriander leaves : 2 to 3 Tablespoons.

Method :

1. Remove and wash black eyed beans from its cover and cook till it turns soft. (Pressure cooker 2 whistles).
2. Keep water for boiling. Grate coconut and keep it aside.
3. Wash, green chilly, capsicum, coriander leaves and curry leaves. Cut them into small pieces.

4. Wash ginger and peel off its outer layer. Wash it again and grate it and keep it aside.
5. Keep a big pan on the fire and heat. Add oil, mustard seeds and urid dal. Let mustard seeds splutter.
6. Add cut green chilly and curry leaves. Add Rava /Semolina and fry till the raw smell goes off.


7. Add boiled water and mix it slowly. Add salt. Mix it well. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.


8. Add cooked black eyed beans and mix it well. Add grated ginger. Mix it slowly. Let it be on low flame.

9. Keep a pan on the fire and put a tablespoon of oil. Fry cut capsicum nicely till it turns slightly soft.
10. Add this fried capsicum to Uppittu. Add lemon juice, mix  it well nicely and put off the gas.


11. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of ghee and grated coconut. Mix it again slowly and shift the ready Uppittu to a serving dish.


12.  Add cut coriander leaves and serve " Fresh black Eyed Beans & Capsicum Uppittu.


Note : 

Let the flame be very low while frying rava. Fry it nicely to get good texture of uppittu. Use of any cooking oil is optional. I used coconut oil. Use of more /less green chilly is optional. Use of ghee is optional. You can use little more oil instead of ghee. You can cook capsicum in little water and then add it instead of frying in oil. (Optional). Taste differ.
Time : 30 Minutes.
Serves : 3 to 4 .

Rava - Shavige

Rava Shavige is prepared using medium sized rava/rave/semolina. It is nice and you can enjoy having this Rava Shavige for breakfast, snack time or even for dinner.


I have used medium sized rava, water and salt. You need to have the mould to prepare the shavige.
Shavige is the name for vermicelli. Shavige is normally prepared with raw rice/boiled rice or using both variety of rice.
Shavige/home made vermicelli/noodles  is one of the traditional dish of South Canara. It is one of the tough preparation in those days. In olden days there were big Shavige mane (Shavige mould). One has to wash all the parts of this shavige and then use it. Rice is soaked and ground to smooth paste. Then stirring the ground batter with sufficient water (on fire), and then turn the dough in to big balls and steam. Steamed balls are put it into the mould and then press from the top. You will have to keep a plate at the below and then put them on the plain cloth. Once it it cooled down serve with coconut milk, chutney, thick coconut paladya (vegetable and curd curry), sambar the side list goes on and on. It is one of the nice food to have them for breakfast, lunch, snack time or dinner. Coastal area is rich with coconut trees and the use of coconut is used lavishly in cooking.

Let us see some benefits of having coconut milk in our diet. 
Having coconut milk as one of the side dish with our daily food like idli, dosa, neeru dosa, sweet chapati/Holige /pooran poli, is a habit of our South Canara people. Coconut is rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins.
 Coconut milk is filled with Vitamins C, E, B 1, B 3, and B 6. It contain minerals like iron, sodiumm, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Coconut milk contain saturated fat, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It helps improves the health of digestive system and good for digestion. Coconut milk helps to relax the nerves and the muscles, control blood sugar level and lower the blood pressure and reduce joint inflammation.
Coconut milk is good for hair care and skin care.

Let us see the recipe now :

Ingredients :

Rava /Rave/Semolina (Medium sized) : 2 Cups
Water :  4 Cups
Salt : As required
Ghee / Oil : 1 Teaspoon
Shavige/chakkuli Mould



Method :

1. Keep water for boiling in a big bowl /pan. Add required salt.


2. Pour rava slowly and mix it with water nicely while the water boils. See that no lumps are formed.
3. Once the rava mixes well and it turns thick dough put off the fire.


4. Put a spoon of ghee/oil and mix the dough well.
5. Divide the dough into small portion and make them as ball shape.

6. Apply oil/ghee to idly plates and keep it ready.
7. Now take a small portion of rava dough and put it in the shavige mould.
8. Press/turn the top and put shavige into idly plate.

9. Arrange the idli plates.
10. Put some water in pressure cooker and place a small container or plate.
11. Keep the pressure cooker on the fire and let the water boil.
12. Place the idli plates filled with shavige. Steam for 8 to 10 minutes.


13. Remove the pressure cooker lid and remove cooked shavige to a serving dish.


14. Serve with the side dish that you have prepared.  We had " Rava Shavige " with coconut chutney and jaggery.

Note :

Let rava cooks well while stirring. Use of chiroti rava is optional. Do it on medium flame. The dough should be mixed well or it sticks in the mould and it is hard to press.
Time : 40 Minutes
Serves : 3 to 4 .
